Tryouts Attendance

This section of the McLean Select Basketball "Tryout Process" addresses tryout attendance guidelines and conflicts and competing team tryouts.

Tryouts Attendance Guidelines
McLean Select recommends that coaches provide 4 try-outs for each age group.  A player who can make all try-outs will have the best chance to demonstrate his abilities and potential to the coaches making the selection decisions.  However, McLean Select recognizes that conflicts exist that make attendance at every tryout impossible, and our coaches see “commitment” to basketball demonstrated best by the priority given to the select team post try-outs.  Each parent should take a proactive approach with informing the coaches of conflicts with try-outs, and coaches will consider these conflicts in their evaluations of each player.

Unless otherwise approved by the age group coach, however, players must make one of the first two try-outs to advance to the final round(s) of try-outs - see also “Conflicts” and “Cutting Players Prior to Completion of Try-outs”.

Conflicts and Competing Team Tryouts
McLean Select attempts to interact with the parents and players in a very straightforward fashion.  We welcome players from other zip code areas to try out for our teams, and we recognize that McLean zip code players may try out for other FCYBL teams.  However, we ask that the parents of players inform the coaches of other try-out situations so that we can proceed in our player evaluations in the fairest and most efficient manner possible.

McLean Select expects and encourages our athletes to participate in a variety of other sports, and coaches try their best to accommodate multi-sport athletes.  Our coaches simply expect basketball to take priority over other sports and activities once the “official” Regular Season begins in mid-November.

During McLean Select try-outs, coaches request that parents provide accurate information on our try-out forms regarding any events or activities that may affect the attendance of their player at:

(1)     Pre-Season practices and tournaments from October 15th to November 15th;

(2)     Regular Season practices and games from November 15th until the 21st of February; and

(3)     Post Season tournament games and practices the last week in February and first week of March.

See “McLean Select Conflict Form.”  [Coming soon.]

This information is a significant factor in selecting players for each team.  The coaching staff and the team deserve the benefit of accurate information regarding a player’s attendance, and any unreported conflicts that occur during the season could result in suspension of the playing time guidelines for that player.
